DIY Floating Shelves & the Homies

So yesterday was mainly about the wallpaper and today I thought I'd share the floating shelves. The shelves are actually a little DIY project. I needed storage in here and in my “new everything” plan there was some built in storage. But since I went down the “mini reno” route instead I had to come up with something.

Enter the old home office desktop that I switched out to a bigger one. As I was using it as a wallpapering work table I suddenly realized that it would make two perfect floating shelves.

Please excuse the following two ultra crappy photos. I lost my point and shoot camera last week and my DSLR battery died on me just as I was about to take some photos so these are iPhone ones AND the sun shone like crazy. Not perfect photo conditions…

Anyway, what I did was to cut the end off the table top. It’s a hollow core tabletop so I wanted to get rid of the wood(chip) at the ends.

Then I used the shelf that I had had up in there before as a template for the length of the shelves and cut accordingly and then down the middle so a 60 cm tabletop turned into two 30 cm deep shelves.

Then I used my thumb to press down the cardboard insides at the ends to make room for some pieces of wood for hanging.

To hang I simply drilled holes, added plugs and…

… attached some wood which happened to have almost the perfect dimensions to fit in between the Masonite top and bottom of the tabletop.

The shelves then just slid over like sleeves.

Then I continued to paint the bottoms of the shelves white because they were originally raw Masonite

To attach the shelves to the wood I simply screwed them in at the top. The tops of the shelves are above eye level so you can’t see the screws standing on the floor.

And there they are, killing two birds with one stone. I got rid of the extra tabletop I didn’t need and I got the perfect chunky shelves!

Ps. Turns out that I'm nominated in two categories (Best Home Design Blog and Best DIY Blog) at The Homies over at Apartment Therapy. Thank you so much for nominating me, guys, what a nice surprise!

The Wallpapered WC

So as promised, here’s the WC mini makeover reveal. At first I wasn’t really sure what to do with the space. When we moved in it was kind of the nicest in the house having been freshly painted white but after I started redoing the rest of the house it just looked so boring and dingy. I considered a major overhaul with new everything but it seemed kind of unnecessary so I decided to do a little light reno instead.

Fresh new wallpaper and new shelves. I really love the wallpaper. I’m not big on wallpaper, I often prefer plain walls but I like the idea that it would be like a little surprise stepping in here.

The original floor stayed and although it does look a little dark in these shots it actually goes really well with the grey in the wallpaper. The toilet roll holder is from IKEA. There’s also a matching toilet brush holder and towel rack. The trashcan is by Authentics

Still to do in here is to get a new faucet but I’m tempted to try spray painting the existing knobs silver and see how that goes first. Hmmm. We’ll see.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, the very cute mirror is from Åhléns. Don’t buy it though, it’s such awful quality. I should bring it back but I just can’t be bothered.

366: Day 51-57

Februari 20

Hello tootsies! Meet your new friends!
I’ve been wearing the same shoes all fall and winter long ever since I got those insole things because of my bad foot. They only fit in my Blundstones but now that it’s getting more spring like outside I’ve gotten myself a pair of NIKE Frees in which I can put the insoles. OMG, they are THE most comfy trainers ever. SO light weight! I got a pair for Wille too and he ran almost 16 km (10 miles) yesterday! He started out at home and ended up running all the way to the old town! What!? He’s only ever managed half that before. Magic shoes, I tell you!

Februari 21

A bit of grocery shopping on a Tuesday after work. A packet of tulips and some muscari also came home with me.

Februari 22

Making yet another batch of granola. This time with a mix of dried fruit instead of just apricots.

Yay! Snow is melting quickly now. It’s only the end of February but it sure is starting to feel spring like when the sun’s out!

Februari 24

And a bit of spring inside too looking out.

Februari 25

I’m on an egg blowing mission so there’s a lot of scrambled eggs going on.

Februari 26

Sunny! I can’t wait to give the back garden the much needed overhaul this spring and summer.

That concludes week 8 of 2012!
