Front of House Progress

032

I’m so excited! Later this week I will hopefully get my delivery of materials for the front yard. I can’t wait! I’ve hated everything about this side of the front yard ever since the snow thawed and all the weeds and ugly pink stones were revealed.

My first mission was to get rid of the weedy “lawn” and the unwanted plants so I dug it all up and made a neat little pile under the cherry tree.

Then I bagged it all and had a guy remove it and a bunch of other unwanted stuff. I’m telling you, every time I get a chance to get rid of stuff, weedy lawn or other, I’m on an instant high. To see all this disappear sent me right in to space!

I put an ad on Blocket (our Craigslist) and got rid of all the pink slabs in no time and then I ordered the gravel/sand sub layer that goes under the final layer of gravel. Two cubic meters of the stuff.

But before that could be shoveled out I laid a special membrane (the white sheet in the photo above) on the soil to keep any future weeds out. I used the same method at the old house and it worked really well. This time I didn’t hire one of those machines that stomp the ground to make it super solid but instead danced around on it myself and watered it all down. I’m thinking its such a small area and we’ll only be walking on it, parking bikes and picking cherries so there won’t be a lot of wear and tear.

And here it is, all prepped and ready to receive the gravel and a few other bits and bobs later this week. Yay!

Is it Monday Already?

005

Sorry guys, I totally overslept today and because this vacation is confusing me. I forgot to prepare a post yesterday because I didn’t realize that today is Monday.

I blame the oversleeping on this little lady. She woke me up at 2.48 and 4.35 this morning wanting to go outside. I keep the kitty door closed at night because of Bonus (who was snoozing next to me) and I need to let her out so I get up a couple of times every night. Usually a beam of sun light wakes me up around 6.30 anyway but today it rains and I slept until 9.30! I don’t think I’ve slept for that long in years and sleeping for more than eight hours always gives me a slight headache and back ache so I try to avoid it.

So, on today’s to-do list I have:

* Paint balcony ceiling and tops of posts and trim.

* Paint second or third coats on balcony trim and outside of upstairs windows.

* Paint first coat on outside of kitchen and dining area windows.

Lots of painting. Hopefully I’ll be able to do it all even though it rains a little bit. Most of the areas I’m painting are covered and there’s no wind today. Yesterday it was so windy so the paint tray almost flew out of my hand several times.

On Exercise

022

I’ve been getting question on “my exercise routine” lately.

Um, I don’t have one at the moment. Right now there's no time for anything scheduled as I’m working on the house every second that I’m not working in the office. In the past I’ve gone to the gym and I’ve ridden my bike to work etc but right now I do zilch.

What I do instead is making sure I get enough exercise by doing what I do. That ladder there, imagine the leg exercise you get from running up and down it for eight hours. Scraping the balcony ceiling, excellent for triceps. Riding my bike to look for Bonus, free spinning class. Digging in the garden, a full body workout and shoveling gravel, great for abs (just make sure to bend your legs so you don’t strain your back, yeah, free leg bends too!).

So basically I just turn whatever I do at the house into a workout by doing it at a higher pace than normal. It may not be on a schedule but it’s keeping me fit enough. And I get the jobs done quicker too!

As for diet which I also got questions about I try to cook somewhat healthy meals for Wille and myself every day (a favorite being pasta with homemade pesto and salmon) but when I’m by myself I prefer snacks instead of full meals so now that Wille’s away for a week in Skåne, in the south of Sweden, I’ll probably not cook a whole lot… Bad, yes probably but I’m sure I’ll survive.

Oh, because I’m on vacation I almost didn’t realize that today is FRIDAY! Happy weekend everyone!
